The Bureau of Land management revoked all seven of American Prairie’s bison grazing allotments on public land in Montana, which could have wide ranging impacts for bison reintroduction efforts across the U.S.

The federal land agency reversed course while under pressure from state leadership and denied the leases under Doug Bergum. American Prairie is a conservation non-profit that has identified the northern grasslands of Montana as the only place left in the U.S. to restore an entire prairie ecosystem.

Spokane Wildfires

During extreme red flag conditions, multiple wildfires broke out and burned overnight through parts of Spokane, Wash. on Sunday, August 2, 2026. The wildfires destroyed over 800 buildings and forced 65,000 people to evacuate. Estimated at over $1 billion in damages, they are the costliest wildfire disaster in Washington state history.

Extreme wildfire conditions, like higher temperatures, less snowpack, drought, and drier fuels, are exacerbated by climate change.

“That is a war zone,” Maj. Gen. Gent Welsh of the Washington National Guard said.
