Making Home: Resettling in Montana
Since 2016, over 500 people from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Eritrea, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have resettled in Missoula primarily as refugees.
Most families have traveled thousands of miles with kids, fled their home countries, left family members behind, and started over with suitcases. They have begun to learn a new language, gotten driver’s licenses, changed career paths, bought homes and started businesses. Many were forced to leave their homes due to war, violence or threat of persecution.
The city of Missoula, which first welcomed about 200 Hmong refugees from the Vietnam War in 1979, has a nearly 40-year history of resettlement. These are some stories that showcase the resiliency, challenges, and connections from the resettlement community in Montana.
